Adbusters - initial analysis

Image
Example of deliberately challenging, subversive and upsetting material =  . Why has this been concluded? What ideological message does this construct? To what extent is this unconventional for magazines? This picture has been concluded to be deliberately challenging, subversive and upsetting due to the fact it shows the harsh reality of some people's lifestyles. It is subversive because the lexis beneath the photo portrays it to be an advert that readers would normally want to buy yet its showing that people have had to make flip-flops out of old water bottles instead. This image is deliberately challenging to the audience of the magazine because it makes them think about the differences in lifestyles and it brings to light the struggle.  The ideological message constructed through this image is that many people aren't aware of what some  people have to live like and that consumers of adverts are unaware that they are able to buy expensive it...

How does the front cover of the set edition of Woman reflect the socio-historical context (context of society when it was made= 1964) in which it was made? Make reference to the front cover and one other article from the set edition. The front cover of Woman reflects the socio-historical context to some extent. The front cover features a woman who is a stereotypical housewife who has short hair implying she is neat and tidy and also stereotypically attractive. This reinforces the idea that woman in the 1960's must look a certain way to be seen as attractive. The woman on the front cover is also smiling connoting happiness therefore she is living up to the stereotypical housewife image that if you buy this magazine you will be happy and also attractive. The background colour of the magazine is a rich purple which is not a very appealing colour. However the magazine came out in 1964 connoting that when the magazine came out the colour was likely the be very fashionable. The bina...

The Yangtze river dolphin is not extinct!

The Yangtze river dolphin is not extinct! The Yangtze river dolphin, also known as the Baiji, was apparently seen two weeks ago by tourists in the Yangtze river and was reported to Chinese conservationists. And recently there has been an increase in sightings making the conservationists believe that they are no longer extinct. Chinese conservationists believe the tourists may have caught a rare glimpse of a freshwater dolphin that was declared extinct a decade ago after having been alive for approximately 20 million years. The dolphin initially went extinct in the 1980's after there was an influx of dam-builiding, over-fishing, pollution and boat traffic. Yet it was confirmed to be extinct in  December 2006 following an intense, carefully managed and thorough search of the entire Yangtze River, which failed to spot or hear a single baiji Only twenty years earlier the Yangtze river was thought to have been home to thousands of the Yangtze River Dolphin. The increase in many indu...

Mock exam.

In what ways can newspapers incorporate viewpoints and ideologies? Newspapers can incorporate views and ideologies in many different ways. The Daily Mirror and The Times do this in a particular way and that is by the producer's choice of pictures. The Daily Mirror have a strong and clear hatred for Donald Trump which can be seen through the article with the Statue of Liberty with her head in her hands after his inauguration. This shows how they manipulate ideology of their audience to make them have the same views of Donald Trump as they have. The mise-en-scene of the dark clouds behind the photo of the statue of liberty is a proairetic code suggesting danger and a possible war because of Donald Trump becoming president clearly showing the Daily Mirrors political ideology is left wing. Also, Liberty connotes freedom and because the Statue of Liberty's face is covered it shows how their freedom has been taken away. The idea of codes and semiotics was brought to life through th...
