Narrative

Narrative =  way in which the story is told Narrative = not JUST the story, it is also told through mise-en-scene, costume, colour, ideology, editing, music, gestures and graphics. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tzvetan Todorov = Narratology - Narrative Equilibrium  Equilibrium = a state of balance/normal  Might have an equilibrium at the start or end. Step 1 = Establishment of equilibrium Step 2 = Disequilibrium (something goes wrong)  in-between = The liminal period (neither good nor bad) Step 3 = Partial restoration of the equilibrium (things go back to normal yet nothing can go back exactly the same as somethings have changed. For example people may have died) Merlin  1. Merlin and Arthur are fine  2. Arthur gets stabbed and Merlin loses his magic 3. Arthur dies and everything goes back to normal  Narrative advantages =  ...

introduction to representation

Stuart Hall - theories of representation Representation = something that shows something again (the way in which something is shown in a different way). Representation is the way in which a media product constructs the world and aspects in it, including social groups, individuals, issues and events. "their importance for language is not what they are but what they do" Everything we see in a media product, represents something else.  HOW TO WRITE OR TALK ABOUT REPRESENTATION: - Who or what is being represented? - How is the representation being constructed through media language? - what ideology is presented about the represented group? - what is the societal impact of this message on the group being represented? Lindt "Do You Dream In Chocolate?" advert = - The woman is in a sexual relationship with the chocolate - very romantic advert - extreme close up of the relaxed face connotes sex and sexual activity - slow paced editing - use of fades repre...

identity and charity adverts

In what way can we identify ourselves? - gender - fashion sense - age - ethnicity  David Gauntlet = theories of identity  Gauntlet believes that despite many negative perceptions of the media, audiences are capable of constructing their own identities through what they see on tv.  He also believes that there are now many more representations of gender than the traditional 'gender binary'  Negative stereotype of audiences = read something/see something and do it. Gauntlet DOESN'T BELIEVE THIS! Stereotypical roles and characteristics of men: - strong - does a lot of the work - short hair - physically attractive - doesn't get upset - tall and muscular - dominant  - men love cars - men are brave and confident Stereotypical roles and characteristics of women - do cooking and cleaning - look after the children - relies on the husband  - wears makeup  - cares about looks - small -weak - women love jewellery WHEN TALKING...

Learning conversation

What do you think has gone particularly well so far this year? What are your strengths? So far, i think that Media has gone well so far due to the fact that i am able to complete the work at a standard i'm happy with and i understand most of the work within Media Strengths = making good notes, organised etc.          What is stopping you from achieving your goals? What threats might you face, (for example not enough time, lack of organisation, pressure from other subjects...) Sometimes i don't have enough time in exams as i spend too long on questions and then have to rush other questions.  Identify 3 specific targets for yourself for the rest of this year. They can be both academic and organisational goals. - i would like to pass all of my subjects  - find a balance between my social and academic life - make sure i complete my work to a good standard  What grade do you want to achieve in media studies? I would like to...
