Les Revenants
LES REVENANTS
Ideas about the show -
- Power outage - reservoir - underground base - brought people back
- Young boy (Victor) doesn't act like a human - he is possibly causing everything to happen.
- They never actually died
- It's Hell - they all actually died and everything bad that happened is Hell
- Doesn't follow conventions of a horror making it atypical
What makes it French -
- The setting - it's sent in the French alps
- The last scene - under age characters having sex - would be seen in English programmes surprising
- Architecture - large windows etc. Camille's family have a large middle class house
- There are a lot of extremely violent and gory scenes - woman getting stabbed
- It is produced by a French programme - canal +
- A lot of young women walking home/ around on their own - seems to be more French than English - more liberal attitude towards women
- Lena in the bar wants to sleep with a guy.
- Actors look french
FACTS =
- It was first broadcasted in France on 26 November 2012 on canal +
- First broadcasted in UK on 9 June 2013 on Channel 4
- There are 2 series and 8 episodes (HUMANS has 8 eps)
- Based on the French film 'They Came Back' (Les Revenants - directed by Robin Campillo in 2004)
- Created by Fabrice Gobert
- Another version of this is The Returned but is American
GENRE =
(conventions make up a genre)
Supernatural
Paranormal Romance - Simon and Adele - Simon = zombie possibly
Drama -
Action - bus falls off cliff
Horror - when she was being stabbed
Mystery - when the kids and people begin to come back
Avant Garde - doesn't have answers, deliberately boring, suddenly very violent and sexual then goes back to being boring
Les Revenants is atypical, subversive and unconventional
This show is an example of Cult TV
Cult means it is watched by a small amount of people = cheap to make.
Cult TV shows can never be huge financial success because of this.
Niche TV Show with not a big audience.
First Show = Twin Peaks
Cult TV show -
subverting the genre of a crime drama
Buffy the Vampire Slayer =
Horror and Teen Drama = genre
Fans are intense about it - even though it finished after 7 series its still being written about in comic books
The Wire
Steve Neale's Theory = Genre
- genre is a form of categorisation for audiences so that they can chose what they like and dislike - producers can then study audience and work out what is popular - in order to MAKE MONEY
- Genre doesn't tell us much about a tv show - Genre is often ineffective in categorising films/ tv shows (e.g. all crimes are different like Sherlock and Luther are very different)
- Genre limits creativity
Considering how useless Genre is for Les Revenants:
- Can't really put it into a specific genre
