Humans and theory

Key theory - Narratology - Tzvetan Todorov
All narratives share a basic structure that involves a movement from one equilibrium to another.

Equilibrium = state of balance, things are alright
Humans is set in an alternative universe

- Equilibrium = In humans this is the start of the programme when it is just a normal family, they don't have the synth
- Disruption to equilibrium - disequilibrium = when the family gets the Anita - she is going to corrupt the family in particular the father because she is a sexual threat. Anita disrupts the mother's equilibrium because she disrupts her statement as a mother.
- At the end it doesn't go back to normal because they want it to carry on to the next episode.

Humans is presenting a complex narrative to it's audience to engage them. This show makes extensive uses of flashbacks. While this show presents many hermeneutic codes it is still very easy to follow. Humans has a complex but satisfying narrative;. It is a main stream show which needs to appeal to target audiences and make people want to carry on watching.

Character arc = we follow the story of a particular character.

Diametric opposition = exactly the same as a binary opposition = two opposing things are placed in a media product to create conflict.
e.g. the bad of the girl being abused in a brothel and Anita who is in a loving relationship in a family environment.
OR
Anita and Laura (the mum) = Anita is exotic and Laura is neutral and boring - Anita is attractive and Laura isn't = negotiated reading = if you disagree.
