Riptide - Vance Joy

Convergence = where two different industries come together - coming together of two previously separate media industries - used to be very rare but is now incredibly common - using a computer for watching a film, stream music, go on social media etc.

synergy = where the interconnectedness of media products leads to a result of more of the sum of it's parts e.g. merchandise tie-ins, TV shows etc.

The benefits of this synergistic convergence between music and film is that two completely distinct and separate audiences can simultaneously be targeted.

Music Video:
  • constant music
  • much shorter 2-4 mins at most on average
  • dancing
  • variety shot types
  • quick cuts
  • less dialogue if any
  • doesn't have to be realistic
  • music video is advert
  • free to watch a music video
  • bold and over the top mise-en-scene
  • a lot more movement in music videos
  • focusses on one song
  • often feature celebrity - you are looking at the celebrity playing the song - lady gaga is singing her song
  • music video is edited in time with the music
Film:
  • mainly background music
  • much longer length 1.5-3 hours
  • dancing would only happen regularly if musical
  • more dialogue in films - expect to hear it in films
  • the film is the product - trailer is like a music video
  • £9 to see a film
  • clear narrative in films
  • much much higher budget
  • celebrities are acting and being someone else
Celebrity = the attribution of glamorous or notorious status to an individual in the public sphere.

Lady Gaga - Applause
How is she a celebrity in this video?
  • bold clothing
  • all of her costumes are weird and different
  • flashing lights - strobe light connoting a club = exciting place to be connoting she is an exciting person = light and dark - two different sides to her personality
  • dancing
  • mainly mid-shots
  • settings and backgrounds were strange
  • she looks like she is on stage
  • spotlight
  • constantly placed in the centre - eye line match - we follow her
  • she is very very sexualised
  • presented in different ways e.g. a goose
  • she is controversial

Tyler the creator - who dat boy
  • following him
  • constant shot - very few cuts
  • edgy
  • he is the main focus
  • he is saying Tyler the creator is popular with white teenagers
  • gets a white face after blowing his face off suggesting in America you must be white to be successful
  • A lot of long tapes
  • not stereotypical clothing for a rap song - dressed like a middle aged white guy.
  • looks more like a film than a music video
A$AP Rocky - A$AP forever
  • loads of different shots that transformed into each other
  • stereotypical clothing
  • zoom in and out is trippy and makes you feel like you are on drugs and sick
  • gang looks threatening and like they belong here
Ariana Grande - Thank u next
  • intertextuality of mean girls
  • different shot types
  • close ups and long shots
  • very sexualised - staring directly at the audience
  • voyeurism - seeing american teenagers bedroom
  • pushing someone out of the way in hall way shows importance and celebrity status - she is very relatable
  • reinforcing stereotypes on teenage girls
Intertextuality is so important in music videos to bring in other audiences and it makes it so much easier to make a media product.
