Woman magazineee

Main differences between Vogue and Woman
- Woman has a very cluttered mise-en-scene than Vogue
- Vogue has a much higher production value
- Two different target audiences
- In vogue the main focus is on the model
- Vogue assumes that the audience have Cultural Capital
- The woman on vogue is not a housewife
- Cover lines on vogue are much harder to read than on Woman magazine where they are clear and bright to make them easy to read, friendly and approachable
- Woman magazine is fun and is attracting every woman between the ages 30-50

Woman magazine - "Extra Special on Men"
- The vast majority of this magazine is about woman but this article is on men - this article is not a regular feature (something repeated week after week)
- Largest word in the title is "MEN" representing men being superior
- The point of this article is to help the target audience get to know about men - making assumptions that the woman reading this has a male partner.
- It's an example of patriarchal hegemony
- It says how men are quiet and don't speak about their partners therefore woman are open = creating a gender opposition between men and woman
- "if she's not mentioned, he cares all right" - the advice that has been given is meant to be taken up by the woman reading the article - if the audience accepts the preferred reading then the article would've worked.
- This article is giving the audience the pleasure of vital information - men aren't interested in nights out and that if they don't talk about their girlfriend they still love them
- Putting on a tie = going to work - facial expression is a bit smug, looking at the camera and sticking his tongue out in a cheeky way reinforcing the ideology that he is happy to go to work and that men and woman are happy doing what they are doing.
- "bachelor spatula" - making a cooking utensil that is made for woman masculine so that they can use it.
- Shaming men for dying their hair - it's taking the mickey out of men for having their hair done etc. " man is creations masterpiece... but who says so?... man"
- The article is not only talking about men but also putting them down
- DIG HIM article - is stereotyping and sexist representation of men by saying they're all the same (are they actually reinforcing patriarchal hegemony???)
- Critiques men by saying they rely on woman - "buy it on monday"
- The dominant image (woman and man) often includes the dominant ideology (the beliefs held by the public) but this is not true for this article. it is almost comedy.
- Woman is in position of dominance over man by woman's foot being on mans head, she has her hand on her hip connoting confidence, body image of man shows that he is angry, mans legs are in a feminine position (pulling a stereotypical female pose), the woman is smiling and her head is raised. This image is subversive. However it is a joke because it wouldn't happen during the time. The man is dressed in black and the woman is dressed in white which is a binary opposition (black in this context might connote he is bad and she is good because she is wearing white) - EXAMPLE OF A MAGAZINE CONSTRUCTING AND APPEALING TO IT'S TARGET AUDIENCE.
