Magazine's 1

Component 2 =
- magazines
- online media
- television
- media language - terminology
- representation - how different people in society are shown
- audience
- media industry

Question -
Evaluate the validity of this claim with reference to the set editors of Women and Adbusters and the historical contexts in which they are produced [30]

The stereotype is a widely held belief about a group of people - have to speak about this in representation.

Roland Barthes - semiotics - codes
Claude Levi-Strauss - structuralism - binary opposition = creates conflict.

Name of magazine = POP
Layout and design - quite a simple front cover - picture of the woman takes up alot of the page - only small bits of writing - mise-en-scene of the clothing shows wealth - says the price in the top corner
Font size, type and connotations - The font is big connoting that the people reading the magazine won't be very smart, the type of font is quite fancy connoting that higher class people may read it. The price of the magazine is £6.50 and is shown in the top corner showing that it is quite expensive for a magazine and only higher class people would be able to read it.
Images/Photographs - shot type, angle, focus - The photograph of the woman is a mid-shot mainly focussing on her face - she's not wearing much makeup connoting the importance of the fashion instead of makeup.

MAXIMUMROCKNROLL
layout and design = main image takes up the majority of the space

Magazines work in a very different to any other media product

differences between magazines and newspapers =
- newspapers talk about current events, whereas magazines talk about gossip
- magazine = cater for a specific interest // newspaper = important and what you need to know
 - magazines have less of a focus on current affairs
- magazines have glossy covers - newspapers don't as much much cheaper
- magazines have a lot more photos and visuals
- much less of an emphasis on text
- magazines are on average significantly more expensive than newspapers
- magazines cover a broader range of things
- magazines have a much smaller circulation (amount printed - might only be a few hundred)
