Adbusters

Contextual factors = background information

Ideology/ethos of Adbusters =
- They are against adverts because they believe that adverts are misleading and aren't the truth - they believe they are promoting a fake ideology.
- They don't like the idea of consumerism (your life gets better if you buy more things) They believe it's taking away our own identity.

How does Adbusters subvert the conventions of magazines?
- Adbusters doesn't have adverts but most magazines have adverts because that's the way they make a third of it's funding. Adbusters have a very high cover price of £10.99 to make the majority of their money.
- There is hardly any text whereas a magazine usually has a lot of text. High end fashion magazines usually have a lot of pictures as well to promote their products.
- Has a dark and controversial subject matter. It reports on controversial stuff. Woman magazine wouldn't have an image of dead children because it's not what their target audience would want and also a lot of magazines wouldn't have returning customers if their was pictures of dead people within the magazine.
- On every magazine, Adbusters changes it's brand identity every two months and most magazines wouldn't change their brand identity so frequently because it makes them unrecognisable to the consumers.

How does Adbusters interact with the audience?
- Doesn't tell the audience to do - LACKS ANCHORAGE.
- Has a lot of things that are wrong with society but doesn't tell the audience how to fix the problems.
- It gets the audience involved in environmentally friendly things
- Adbusters is non-profit and DOESN'T HAVE A BRAND IDENTITY.

Curran and Seaton's theory = Power = a few number of groups within the media industry have power and its getting worse and worse.
For Curran and Seaton the audience doesn't just already exist; it is made by the producer of the media product.

what do Curran and Seaton mean by making your own audience?
If you make your own audience, the company can make their profit.
E.g. Apple removed the headphone jack and knew that people would need bluetooth headphones so came out with the airpods
E.g. Adbusters constructs their audience by giving us an idea/mission (like to go out and change the world and make it a better place)
