The Sci-fi Genre and SocioHistorical Context

Humans

What are the conventions seen in Human?
- futuristic technology - mise-en-scene - Anita's processing speed was very quick
- robots - the way they were acting
- robots taking over humans
- super-human themes
- Use of digital beeping sounds - noise made when Anita has chin pushed
- Techno old school soundtrack

It is a stereotypical and conventional TV show.
However it is set in the modern day - this makes it a contemporary setting - this is unusual for sci-fi, it is normally set in the future. It is an alternative universe.

It is also subversive because humans have interactions Artificial intelligence and have emotional attachments. This makes it deliberately uncomfortable. For example, when Anita watches the little girl while she is sleeping.

SocioHistorical = matters relating to history and society.

Allegory =
Metaphor that makes a broader comment on society - allegorical text is extremely useful because as they make the audience think about further messages and more about what is going on.

For example, Humans is about how robots could take over but it may be about the advance of technology.

Media producers can encode all different ideas through allegory.

Zeitgeist
'the Spirit of time'
Mean girls = 2001 - very naughty clothing shows the time of when it was made

In what way does Humans use genre conventions to explore real world issues?
- Relationships between men and woman in contemporary British society - woman is out working at start of programme and the man is a stay at home dad.
- Involvement of technology in families - the robot is trying to take over the mothers job and relationship between children.
- Death and loss - relationship between George and Odie = father and son - Odie seems as though he may have disabilities - he behaves like someone who has dementia.
- Corporations taking over
- Discrimination and Racism = the mum talks down to Anita and says she's just a stupid robot
- Immigration = synths immigrate and they are taking jobs - Matilda says whats the point of learning how to be a doctor.
- Sexualisation and rape = way in which woman are treated in society - synth actually has sex who is a prostitute; she isn't being paid, doesn't want to do it = rape.
- Modern Slavery
- Capitalism and the nuclear family
- Prostitution and the rights of sex workers
- racism
- hyperreality.
