Scene analysis in Les Revenants
Simon and Lena and Simon and Adele:
- Low-key lighting increases the intensity and mystery of the scene. The low-key lighting in Adele's house is connotative of something bad is going to happen = proairetic code. Intertextual reference to the gothic horror genre, as there is also a light source coming from a lamp creating a binary opposition. The lighting is artificial.
- Hermeneutic code is created through the mystery of who Simon is to Adele - why wasn't she happy to see him? Her response isn't logical or typical of the genre, she is screaming at him to leave her alone. The mid-sot of Adele collapsing against the door is symbolic of her misery while she is screaming and crying. The audience is positioned with Adele - we sympathise and empathise with her but also confused. We are deliberately placed in a confusing position - it's atypical - Simon says "open the fucking door" (they were married)
- Mise-en-scene of Simon's suit suggests his rough past
- Non-diegetic soundtrack by Mog White - piano is really pushed to the front of the music production = an arpeggiated piano refrain = mournful and sad
- The big theme of this show is death - death is certain, we all know we are going to die - most TV shows don't focus on this because it is extremely depressing but Les Revenants also focusses on returning after death - extremely uncommercial theme
- The mise-en-scene of the mirror symbolises simon is a ghost and doesn't belong here - relatable moment as mirror can be scary - death is also symbolised through here
- Mirrors are sometimes said to be ways ghosts get to people
- The diagetic knocking sounds coupled with the shot of the handle moving is highly conventional of the horror genre - intertextual reference to a horror film called Halloween - intertextual references are important as it makes clear of the genre to the audience as it isnt made clear to the audience that the genre is horror (this scene may also be considered as a hybrid-genre - it generates a hybridity of horror and paranormal romance - made it this way to attract more people
- Location = night and low-key lighting - creates horror genre
- Adele is wearing a white dress which is symbolic of the fact she is married - also her purity and innocence. Simon is also wearing a suit which is black and white. A binary opposition is being created between Simon and Adele as they are being shown as very different - it is also symbolic of a wedding and that they are getting married - She isn't Also Simon is very aggressive (stereotypically masculine) while Adele is crying in the corner (stereotypically weak) - This scene supports Lizbet Van Zoonen theory that men and women are represented differently.
- Simon is also much much younger than Adele
- Lot's of close up shots - this is called a shot counter shot - Simon opening the door and the Adele not wanting to open the door - showing there is a physical barrier between them.
- Lena looks scruffy and like a rebel. The mise-en-scene of her short skirt and red hair suggests she is a rebel because she had a fiery personality. Green Military jacket connotes aggressive personality
- Location = rural and set in the middle of nowhere - Lena doesn't look scared she just looks pissed off.
- Long shot of Lena walking away shows how alone she actually is.
- It's much more experimental with it's cinematography
- Mise-en-scene of Adele's house
- They are all middle class characters for a middle class audience - every character in this show is white apart from the firefighter which also suggests it is for a white audience.
- Slow paced editing - starts off slow but then increases as the music intensifies.
Lena and Camille and Old man (Monsieur Costa) kills wife
- Binary opposition of emotions between Monseiur Costa and Lena and Camille
- High angle shot of Mrs Costa and the mise-en-scene of the ropes that tied her suggests his power
- We are positioned in a completely different room so the wall and fire are between us so we can't get to her making us feel guilty. Also, she isn't struggling and screaming - she's just wondering what he is doing to her - Mr Costa isn't a great person as he is literally burning his wife
- Contrapuntal sounds - sound that doesn't fit - soundtrack doesn't fit - its a mundane song - boring and mundane response from Mrs Costa and Mr Costa doesn't seem too bothered as he thinks he has gone mental.
- Stereotypical of an old persons house
