Les Revenantssssss

Image
Mogwai = band that did music in Les Revenants = they made all of the music for the tv show whereas normally the composer makes the music. Mogwai are from Scotland - rock band - unconventional rock band because it's quite mellow and heavy. They aren't wearing rock clothes, normal and boring looking, wear things like adidas tracksuit. Atypical because they dont have a vocalist (singer). The genre of Mogwai is post-rock - they have a niche or cult audience. Mogwai can ensure the show has a pre-sold audience, makes it atypical  While on stage there were: - Close up shots of facial expressions  - Close up shots of playing the guitar  - just standing there, not dancing - this also makes them atypical  _________________________________________________________________________ The US DVD Trailer analysis =  - It makes it seem a lot more exciting than it actually is - it has a range of characters, edited    by someone else - distributors - they take a completely different ro

Mini mock

Mini Mock Compared with the past, David Gauntlett argues that in the media today ‘we no longer get singular, straightforward messages about ideal types of male and female identities.’ Evaluate the validity of this claim with reference to the set episode of Humans and Les Revenants David Gauntlet’s theory of identity encodes the ideology that audiences are not passive and that media products allow audiences to construct their own identities by using the ‘pick and mix’ idea. Within the media today, there are no longer straightforward messages about the types of male and female identities in order for the producer to attract a larger audience and make more money. In the past, a lot of the messages that were given to the audience about male and female identities were stereotypical beliefs that didn’t represent everyone. In Les Revenants, during the scene where Lena is walking Simon home to see Adele, she comes across as an assertive character. This is reinfor

Mini mock questions to look at

Compared with the past, David Gauntlett argues that in the media today ‘we no longer get singular, straightforward messages about ideal types of male and female identities.’ Evaluate the validity of this claim with reference to the set episode of  Humans  and  Les Revenants NEED TO USE DAC FOR INTRO  Theory of identity   -  Audiences are not passive, and media products  allow the audience to construct their own identities . Audiences can pick and mix which ideologies suit them, and completely ignore the elements of the product which they do not agree with in a process of negotiation similar to the one suggested by Stuart Hall. Things have changed - in the past a lot of the messages given to the audience about male and female identities were stereotypical beliefs that didn't represent everyone.  Scene when Lena is walking Simon home - she is quite assertive - doesn't get what she wants so calls him a dickhead - she is atypical - shows she is being presented as a subvert f

EXAM STRUCTURE

How to structure a paragraph =  P E A Point, Evidence, Explain  Talk about WHY you are right Introduction: Talk about your main idea - what point of view will you be arguing for?  Define key terms Talk about context D A C = Definition, Argument, Context  What you do when you get into the exam:  Read the question carefully Highlight key terms Think of an argument/ opinion  Make a plan Write introduction using DAC Write about key scene one (one key scene per paragraph) Conclusion  SHORTER PARAGRAPHS ARE EASIER TO MARK - DO THIS Important words to use in the exam = - representation  - ideology - hegemonic - hermeneutic, proairetic, symbolic etc - encoded - stereotype - intertextuality - negotiation  - polysemy  In the 21st century it is essential for TV shows to offer their audiences multiple meanings. Evaluate this with reference to Les Revenants Agree- for the purposes of money and power  Represent

Les Revenants - key scene analysis

Key Scenes =  The sex scene Mid-shot of Lena wearing white top represents purity and virginity The leaves in the background are representative of youth and purity Hermenunetic codes as we start to learn to about the characters Mise-en-scene of kitchen sink appears stereotypically middle-class  - aspirational middle-class family. Lena 'pulling a sickie' to sneak in her boyfriend is a relatable moment for the audience Birds eye view close up of Lena and her boyfriend positions us with them, which feels uncomfortable, positioning us is a voyeuristic way. - this is anchored through the use of low-key lighting which connotes intimacy, privacy and ultimately, sex.  Lena's boyfriend looks stereotypically low-class through the use of costume. The difference  between the class of the couple creates a diametric opposition - Lena is different from the rest of her family, she is rebellious. This is generally a consensual and positive representation of sex (sex positive).

Les Revenants exam structure

Les Revenants  Hyperreality = when a representation is better than reality The whole show is hyperreal as they all come back from the dead THE SHOW IS SET IN A SMALL TOWN IN THE FRENCH ALPS - CANT JUST SAY FRANCE  Representation = when something is presented again by the producer in order to manipulate the ideology of the target audience.  Producers do this in order to construct an ideal reality to shape the world. It allows audiences to gage and interact with the show more - for financial reasons (to create money) (need to include definition in exam)  Les Revenants is highly polysemic (also manipulative) You should use your own argument to talk about the show.  Are representations ever real? NO - whatever we see in film and tv shows isn't real, it is someones version of reality or what reality should be like.  EXAM STRUCTURE. Right at the start of the paragraph, say who is being represented? e.g. Lena is an unstereotypical girl Use key scene

The television industry

The Television Industry   Television is a specialised industry - it has it's own structure etc Digital media has completely changed the way the television industry works  Television in the 21st century =  - Changed completely since the advent of digital technology in terms of it's production,            distribution and consumption.  - Has become global rather than national industry  - has become increasingly commercial with public service broadcasting - product of a capital society - idents make it known what we are watching - broadcasters are now "narrowcasters" with multiple channels targeting different audiences  - Interactive social media channels like YouTube have increased accessibility for the     "prosumer" audience = digital convergence - all being played, viewed and watched in the       same way - on your phone What is a broadcast? Piece of media that spreads a wide net - hoping to attract a wide range of audience members.  First
