Straight Outta Compton and film regulation

Steve Neale - theory of repetition and difference.
Cliche film posters are represented by this theory due to the fact that in horror movies there will always be low-key lighting and maybe pictures of a silhouette or an eye etc.

Key theory 12 - power and media industries - Curran and Seaton
The media is controlled by a small number of companies primarily driven by the profit and power.
Media concentration limits variety, creativity and quality.
More socially diverse patterns of ownership can create more varied and adventurous media productions.
They argue that we need more smaller companies essentially we will continue to get the same type of media product and movie posters that have already been seen.

Straight Outta Compton

Context =
- Produced by legendary pictures who entered into partnership with Universal Pictures in 2014
- Universal is owned by NBC universal, a Comcast company
- It is essential to notes the film was produced and distributed by a major, vertically, integrated film studio that is a part of a media conglomerate is significant in terms of funding, possibilities for cross-promotion and reaching a global audience.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Horizontal integration = Where a company buys another company in the same group
Vertical integration = Where a company buys another company that are involved in the making of a film
Conglomerate = When one company buys another big company to make more money than them.

Ways a film could be marketed =
- Posters
- TV advert
- Leaflet
- Billboard
- Social media
- YouTube ads
- Side ad on a website
- Radio advert
- Cinema advert - theatrical trailer
- Teaser trailer
- Websites
- Social Marketing
- PR stunts
- Fan created marketing - websites, forums, fan fiction etc.

Marketing = the process of selling something.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
N.W.A - Fuck the Police
- Genre - hiphop/ rap
- Negative representation on police
- debates as to whether the police are doing their job properly
- Song is basically attacking police due to the fact that they were seen to be attacking people based on the colour of their skin e.g. shooting black people and arresting black people.
- Song brings up issues of black gun violence
- This song is directly attacking white police officers = racist
- Brought up the idea of killing white police officers
- Lot's of swearing - consistent bad language throughout the song.

Straight Outta Compton film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5r5cZk0EfY
- Music in background is effective - loud drum heavy hip-hop - effect on the audience is up-lifting and exciting music.

- Large amount of dialogue within the trailer to show the ideology
- flashes between peaceful and violence
- It brings up controversial topic making it very difficult for it to be marketed
- Creates curiosity for the audience - appeals to a young black male audience who might be able to identify to the characters.
-The film is actually quite violent, contains a lot of swearing and contains sex scenes yet the trailer doesn't show much of this.
- Trailer has a political message and plays down the violence, swearing and sex
- Trailer becomes appropriate to all audiences due to the fact they blurred out the swearing within the trailer.
- Trailer tells it's own narrative.
- Rags to riches story
- no spoilers but there were significant parts of the films.
- Normally a trailer would have a narrator yet this film is going for a sense of realism
- Trailer makes it seem funny that a character wants to take a gun on tour
- Trailer is light hearted in a lot of ways
- We don't find out who the actors are within the film - not well known actors, they are up and coming - names of characters are given in the trailer.
- The selling point of the movie is the N.W.A and their music.
- Straight Outta Compton uses synergy as it combines film and music which is used to attract more visitors
- Logo is effective because it looks like a parent guided sticker.

Synergy = where two or more media industries combine

The average amount of money used to advertise/market a Hollywood film is $39million

After the film Straight Outta Compton was released, they released a CD with all of the songs on it.

Regulations = rules and restrictions that a media product must follow.

Company that regulates films in the United Kingdom is the BBFC.
BBFC's job is to put an age certificate and regulate different types of films.

Uc - especially suitable for younger children

U -Universal – Suitable for all A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over, although it is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child.

PGParental Guidance – General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Unaccompanied children of any age may watch, but parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive, children.

12/12A - Suitable for 12 years and over Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult

15- Suitable only for 15 years and over -  No one younger than 15 may see a 15 film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video work.

18 - Suitable only for adults - No one younger than 18 may see an 18 film in a cinema. No one younger than 18 may rent or buy an 18 rated video work.

R18 - To be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied only in licensed sex shops, and to adults only The R18 category is a special and legally-restricted classification primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, and video works may be supplied to adults only in licensed sex shops

E - exempt from classification - applies to non-offensive documentaries
The BBFC is the regulation of theatrical releases (cinemas etc.) and DVDs - they only apply to the sale of films. DON'T REGULATE ONLINE FILMS LIKE ON NETFLIX

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regulation in the UK on films isn't very effective due to digital technology. It is extremely east to access inappropriate material online which any ages are able to see.

Key Theory 13 - Regulation - Sonya Livingstone and Peter Hunt
- It is difficult to regulate media
- Everything is changing and things that weren't possible before are now incredibly easy to do now.
- The increasing power of global media corporations together with the rise of convergent media technologies and transformations in the production, distribution and marketing of digital media have placed traditional approaches to media regulations at risk.
